Staff at PGL adventure holiday centres for children are being investigated for drug misuse, as Ofsted issued a warning over safety concerns.

The education watchdog has suspended the registrations of four activity centres belonging to PGL, which hosts children aged seven to 17.

Inspectors visited five PGL sites providing care and activities?for?unaccompanied children in England during the October half-term.

Unhappy with their findings, Ofsted immediately suspended the registrations of four of the sites in Wiltshire, Surrey, Dorset and East Sussex.

The government agency confirmed it, alongside partner agencies, is investigating the conduct of some members of staff, including for drug misuse.

Other issues raised related to environmental health concerns and health and safety issues.

       'Serious safeguarding issues'

An Ofsted spokesman said: "This week, we undertook inspections of five PGL centres providing Ofsted-registered care and activities?for?unaccompanied children on half-term holidays.

"Having found serious?safeguarding issues at four of these sites, we have taken the?decision to immediately suspend each of the four registrations.

"Some of the concerns identified are being investigated by other agencies and we are unable to provide specific details at this stage. But we can advise that they include environmental health concerns, health and safety issues and the conduct of staff - including substance misuse.

"Ofsted is only able to inspect PGL's registered childcare provision in England.

"We do not have any power to inspect or regulate the other activities that PGL runs for children who are accompanied by their schools or parents.

"We recognise the impact this decision will have on many families.”

A spokesman for PGL said: "PGL is committed to the highest operational standards.

"Ofsted have highlighted potential risks arising from isolated administrative and procedural shortcomings at four sites.

"Over the next six weeks, we will be working with Ofsted to fully understand their concerns.

"We are passionate about delivering high-quality, inspiring learning experiences that change young people's lives and will address any shortfalls identified."
