A WOMAN who stabbed her husband to death wrote a confession note saying: “I accept my punishment. May he rot in hell.”

Penelope Jackson, 66, put pen to paper moments after she repeatedly knifed 78-year-old David at their bungalow.

It was pictured for the first time yesterday as she was jailed for life for his murder.

The letter — titled “confession” — was written on a notepad in the kitchen on the night they had argued over a serving of bubble and squeak with a steak dinner.

Chillingly, Jackson left it as a direct message to jurors who yesterday convicted her.

She was jailed for life with a minimum of 18 years — meaning she will be at least 84 before she can be considered for release.

The Ministry of Defence accountant showed no emotion as the jurors came back with their verdict after deliberating for ten hours and 43 minutes.

Family members of Mr Jackson — who had been a lieutenant colonel in the Royal Logistics Corps — burst into tears.

The written confession — a crucial piece of evidence in the prosecution case — asked: “Self defence/Pre Med. You decide.”

The full note read: “To whom it may concern, I have taken so much abuse over the years. Look at my records in Germany, but he was a good daddy. However, the mask slipped tonight and that was unforgivable. I accept my punishment. May he rot in hell.”

The note had “sorry about my spelling” written on the edge of the page. A novelty sign that hung above the kitchen aga at the couple’s home in Berrow, Somerset, read “Smartest thing a man ever said: ‘YES DEAR!’”

After her attack in February this year, Jackson told the 999 call handler she had tried to stab David through the heart but added that “he doesn’t have one”. She calmly added: “I've killed my husband, or tried to, because I’ve had enough.”

When asked where he was, she replied: “He’s in the kitchen bleeding to death with any luck.” Jackson repeatedly then refused to help the victim when the handler asked her to take steps, such as apply pressure to the wound or throw him a towel to stem bleeding.

As part of her defence during the two-week trial, she claimed she had been abused by her husband for decades — an allegation David’s family bitterly rejected.

You have taken so much from us all. My father was a proud man, this probably cost him his life because he would he would never have sought help.

       David’s daughter Jane Calverley

In a statement given to the court, she alleged she had been headbutted, strangled and kicked down a stone staircase by her husband.

She said the “extreme violence” had started following the suicide of the David’s son from his first marriage in 1998. But David’s family and friends dismissed Jackson’s suggestions she had been the victim of sustained domestic violence and accused her of lying.

The judge also said he had “no doubt” that David was not the person Mrs Jackson claimed he was. Her heartless nature was on show yesterday when she showed no emotion when told she had been found guilty of murder.

And that continued when heartbreaking and strong family statements were read out in court. Addressing the court, David’s daughter Jane Calverley accused the defendant of being the abuser in the relationship.

Ms Calverley said her father would never have sought help because he would have been too proud to admit to being bullied and abused by his wife. She insisted that despite being estranged she had always loved her father, adding: “By taking his life you have taken away all possibility of us re-establishing a relationship.”

She continued: “You have taken so much from us all. My father was a proud man, this probably cost him his life because he would he would never have sought help."

Ms Calverley said the defendant had wielded “ultimate power" over the victim. She added: “Our society does not promote male victims of domestic abuse and you took advantage of that and had ultimate power over him.

“He rung me the night before your wedding and said he did not want to marry you. I wish I had told him to run as far away as possible.”

She said Jackson had created an “open wound and poured acid over that wound”. She added: “You have taken so much. Shame on you.”

Isabelle Potterton, David and Penelope Jackson's daughter, said “every aspect of my life has been turned upside down” since her mother murdered her father. She continued: “I have lost my dad but I have also lost my mum too. My life has changed forever.

“With our family dynamic being as complex as they are, I am both of (my parents') next of kin. I have had to pick up the pieces.”

The heartbroken daughter said she had to organise her father's funeral as well as help her mother following her arrest and was only focused in justice taking its course. Ms Potterton, who is pregnant with her first child, said: “I have lost the man I looked up to and loved, I have lost the man who was there for me no matter what.”

I have lost my dad but I have also lost my mum too. My life has changed forever.

David's grandson Adam told the killer in a statement read to court he had thought about writing a letter to her — but she would have been “too selfish to read it”. He said the murder “had changed my whole world forever” and that it was “unforgivable”.'

Jailing Jackson for 18 years at Bristol crown court, judge Martin Picton said she had shown “not a shred of remorse” for the killing. He said: “Despite professing to still love him, you sought to portray David Jackson as a monster.

"Whilst there was no doubt, as in any marriage, points of friction that the lockdown would have exacerbated, I have no doubt that he was nothing like the person you have claimed."

Judge Picton continued: “You took the life of another human being. That is a terrible thing to do and it represents a burden you and all the other family members will have to bear for the rest of their lives. Their memories (of David Jackson) will always be tarnished by the manner of his death and by the way you sought to portray him.”

He added he had not seen any remorse from the defendant during the four days she gave evidence. Relatives also told The Sun how they were appalled by Mrs Jackson’s false allegations.

David’s sister Jennifer, 78, told The Sun: “I am just devastated by losing my brother. He was a wonderful guy. He did no harm to anybody and he did not deserve to die. Now all these lies that she is coming out with about him makes it even worse. And they are lies.

“Penelope is no victim. She is very clever — highly intelligent. She worked at the Ministry of Defence. Why would a person like that stick around for so long with someone who wasn’t nice to her? It doesn’t make sense.

“They were due to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary in April. They had four cruises booked. Why would you go with someone who was aggressive and a bully? You would leave them. She could have done that.”

Victoria Mullins, 43, daughter of Penelope and her first husband Melyvn Porter, dismissed her mother's claims in court that her father had been abusive and had had an affair.

She told The Sun: “I don’t believe dad abused my mother and I know he did not have an affair. So many lies have been told about so many things by so many people.

“My dad is really quite poorly. I don’t want to do or say anything else which will make this any harder than it already is for him. It has dragged up a lot of awful memories for all of us.”

One friend of the couple said: “It's been awful what came out. I feel so sorry for the family. David would always try and say sorry for things she would do. It wasn't nice. She was controlling and manipulative.”
