TOKYO -- The Japanese capital recorded 23 new COVID-19 cases on Oct. 30, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced, the 14th day straight under 50 cases.
The capital reported 24 cases the previous day.
In the first week of October, Tokyo averaged 154.3 new infections per day. The figure dropped to 77.1 in the second week, 35.4 in the third and fell further to 25.7 in the fourth week. The capital recorded 31,842 total coronavirus cases in September, for an average of 1,061.4 cases per day, down sharply from the 125,606 total infections -- an average of 4,051.8 cases per day -- tallied in August.
By Oct. 29, 3,142 people had died of COVID-19 in Tokyo since the pandemic began in Japan in the spring of 2020.
Tokyo has recorded 381,633 infections to date, the most among Japan's 47 prefectures. As of Oct. 29, there were 166 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Tokyo, 14 with severe symptoms.
