TOKYO -- Over 10 people are said to have been injured following reports of a knife-wielding man and a fire on a train in suburban Tokyo on the evening of Oct. 31.

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) received a report at about 7:55 p.m. on Oct. 31 of a man carrying a knife on a 10-car Keio Line express train traveling near Kokuryo Station in the Tokyo suburban city of Chofu. The MPD and other sources have said that a man believed to be in his 60s or 70s was stabbed in the eighth car from the train's front, and is seriously injured and unconscious.

The man who was carrying the knife appears to have scattered an oil-like liquid in areas near the sixth car and lit it, and a blaze broke out inside the train, which damaged the floors and seats. Around 10 other passengers were also reported to have been hurt, but all of their injuries are described as minor.

The MPD detained a man at the scene in the ninth car from the train's front who claimed to be in his 20s, and arrested him on the spot on suspicion of attempted murder. The man was carrying a knife, and is now at the MPD for questioning.

Following the incident, trains on the Keio Line between Tsutsujigaoka Station and Tobitakyu Station in both directions were suspended.
