TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japan's main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan is set to fall short of the 110 seats it held in the House of Representatives prior to Sunday's general election, according to Kyodo News exit polls and early returns.

The result comes despite the CDPJ allying with other opposition groups, including the Japanese Communist Party, to back the same candidates in a bid to defeat Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's government.
