TOKYO (Kyodo) -- A German navy frigate will make a port call in Tokyo on Friday, marking the first visit to Japan by a military vessel of the European country in about 20 years, Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi said Tuesday.
The frigate Bayern, which Germany has deployed to the Indo-Pacific as part of its increasing commitment to the region amid China's growing assertiveness, will conduct joint exercises with Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force from Thursday in the Pacific Ocean south of Tokyo, according to the Defense Ministry.
Kishi will inspect the warship on Friday, the ministry said.
The minister welcomed the port call, saying at a press conference it "carries great significance in demonstrating Germany's contribution to peace and stability in the Indo-pacific region."
