Boris Johnson was photographed not wearing a mask while sitting next to 95-year-old national treasure Sir David Attenborough during the opening ceremony on Cop26 in Glasgow. The Prime Minister has received a lot of criticism over the photographer despite both men having taken their masks off at various moments during the speeches. CNN interviewer Christine Amanpour confronted Mr Johnson over the moment, telling him that the picture had gone viral.

Mr Johnson told CNN: "I've been wearing a mask in confined spaces with people that I don't normally meet and I think it's up to people to make a judgement on whether they're at a reasonable distance from someone and whether they're with someone they don't normally meet.

       "That's the approach we take."

His comments come after he said that if the public did not trust him on the need to tackle climate change, they did trust figures such as Sir David Attenborough.

Speaking in Glasgow, Boris Johnson said: "If we don't do this, if we don't fix our climate, it will be an economic catastrophe as well as an environmental catastrophe.

"I think people need to understand that as point number one, the only way to fix this is to reduce CO2 and tackle climate change.

"I also happen to think that there's a great wisdom in the British people and I think that they can see that this is an issue that needs to be fixed and they may not listen to me, but they certainly listen to Sir David Attenborough and they look at what's actually happening around the world.

"They look at the fires, they look at the floods, and they look at the hurricanes, and the increased incidence of all three, much-increased incidence, and they think something's happening here."

He added: "They're not dumb and they can see that this is something that needs to be tackled."

Sir David Attenborough's latest landmark natural history series has premiered in Glasgow, showing viewers the hidden world of plant life.

The Green Planet uses groundbreaking filming techniques to show viewers the intricate lives of plants and the ecosystems that flourish around them.

The global premiere took place in Glasgow on Sunday evening, as the city hosts the Cop26 summit on tackling climate change.

Game Of Thrones star Maisie Williams gave a speech introducing the first episode of the series, after meeting Sir David for the first time as he arrived in Glasgow for the premiere.

In his latest television production, the renowned natural historian takes an active role in front of the camera, describing the way plants thrive around the world.

Speaking ahead of the showing, he said: "It is quite fitting that The Green Planet will receive its premiere at Cop26, and I'm pleased that I could be in Glasgow to see it with an audience.

"For years plant life has been largely ignored when talking about climate change, but as viewers will see from watching the series, the green ecosystem is at the heart of all life on earth and thus it's vital that we tackle biodiversity and climate change together."

The production team for The Green Planet used a custom-made type of camera rig to show the life of plants in minute detail.

The five-part series from the BBC's Natural History Unit is expected to air early in 2022.
