KAGOSHIMA -- A man and a woman both thought to be in their 60s have been confirmed dead in this southwest Japan city after a man in his 30s who is believed to be their son called police and said he killed his parents.

Police received an emergency call from a private residence in the city of Kagoshima at around 9:15 p.m. on Nov. 3, in which they were told, "I killed my mom and dad." Officers rushed to the scene, where they found a man thought to be in his 60s collapsed and bleeding. He was later confirmed dead. The younger man was in the house and suggested he killed the older man, leading Kagoshima Prefectural Police's Kagoshima Chuo Police Station to bring him into custody on Nov. 4 for questioning.

A woman who appears to be in her 60s was also found collapsed in a room at a prefectural housing complex in Kagoshima. She was later confirmed dead. The deceased are reportedly the younger man's parents, and police are investigating with the belief it is a murder case.

Police said that when officers arrived outside the house, the younger man was holding a kerosene can and what appeared to be a match while he shouted from a street-facing second-floor window. After police assumed positions in anticipation he could hole up in the property or set fire to it, they entered at around 12:30 a.m. on Nov. 4. Inside they found the older man collapsed and bleeding from his neck and abdomen.

Police took the younger man into custody at around 1:15 a.m., after he emerged from the house's entrance. Officers then used information he provided to find a woman bleeding from her face at a prefectural housing complex at around 2:30 a.m.

The scene the man was detained from is in a residential area. Neighborhood residents were temporarily evacuated during the events.
