KOTA KINABALU: A family of five’s short getaway almost turned tragic when they nearly drowned while swimming in the sea at a resort in Karambunai near here on Friday (Nov 5).
The five aged between 10 and 40, had gone to the beach for a swim prior to the 9am incident.
It is learnt that strong currents had pulled the five people further out into the sea, away from the shore.
Nearby beach goers as well as resort staff who saw the incident, had rushed to their aid and brought them back to safety.
Tuaran Fire and Rescue Department chief Abdul Qawie Abdul Gapar said their team of rescuers was despatched to the scene following a distress call at about 9.01am.
"The victims were already rescued and brought to shore when firemen arrived at the scene," he said.
He said the victims were given preliminary medical examinations before three of them were taken to the Tuaran hospital for further checkup.
Qawie said two others were reported to be fine and stable.
The firemen ended their operations at 10.15am.
