Haverfordwest paddleboard tragedy: Woman arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter as fourth victim dies

       A WOMAN has been arrested for gross negligence manslaughter after a fourth paddleboarder died in a river tragedy.

       Former-soldier Paul O'Dwyer, 42, tragically drowned along with Nicola Wheatley, 40, and Morgan Rogers, 24, as fierce downpours lashed the River Cleddau in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, last Saturday.

       And Wales Police today confirmed Andrea Powell, 41, died this morning after being in hospital for a week after the tragedy.

       A woman from South Wales was arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter but has since been released.

       A Dyfed-Pwys Police statement read: "Following the incident on the Cleddau River in Haverfordwest on Saturday, October 30, we can confirm a woman from the South Wales area has been arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter as part of the investigation. She has been released under investigation.

       "Sadly we can also confirm that 41-year-old Andrea Powell from the Bridgend area, who was in hospital following the incident has now died.

       "Our thoughts are with her family, and all those involved in this tragic incident."

       Police were scrambled after reports of the group "in distress" in the water near the town centre just after 9am.

       Dad Paul is understood to have died heroically attempting to rescue fellow paddleboarders who got into trouble.

       He was an ex-soldier and had served with The Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers 108 Welsh Squadron militia.

       After leaving the military he became one of the founders of charity SA1UTE, which supports veterans in the South Wales area.

       One of the paddleboarders who was on the trip, Vickie Mckinven from Milford Haven, said Paul had died attempting to rescue two fellow paddleboarders who had got into difficulty near the weir.

       He said: "Paul did lose his life attempting to save two of the girls also in distress due to an unexpected downpour.

       "Absolutely heartbreaking, was all good friends and did so much to raise money for charities."

       TRAGEDY ON WELSH RIVER

       The family of 24-year-old Morgan called her a "beautiful, kind and loving soul".

       A statement added: "Morgan was a beautiful, kind and loving soul, beloved by all who have been touched by her warm smile and her caring personality.

       "Morgan was never happier than when she was in the outdoors doing what she loved and spending time with her family.

       "She will be greatly missed by her family and friends and all those she has known along the way. Morgan will always be in our hearts and our memories. We will miss her dearly."

       Meanwhile, Nicola's family said she was "amazing in every way".

       They added: "She has left a void in our lives that will never be filled."
