PETALING JAYA: A video of the Caucasian woman who caused a stir for refusing to put on a face mask at a luxury retail store is going viral on social media.

In the two-minute, 20-second video, she starts with a selamat pagi (good morning) and identifies herself as Kerry and says she came to Malaysia from Manchester 20 years ago.

"My heart, my soul (and) my children all have a much-loved home here.

"Our song is freedom – freedom to choose what we eat, where we go, who we go with and what we do to our bodies, medically or otherwise.

"It is a choice, your choice, my choice," she said in the video which was posted on Twitter on Saturday (Nov 6).

She then says many countries are giving up their Covid-19 mandates and asks the viewer to "form your own opinion".

She then uses the phrase "rumah terbuka" (open house) and says: "Open your eyes, open your hearts, open your souls, open your homes, open house, love, laughter, joy, makanan enak (delicious food).

"Imagine open houses every day for the rest of our lives. All Malaysians, all one, all united.

"A man who does not know his rights has no rights. We are free," she says.

Two videos of the woman have gone viral, both where she does not wear a face mask as required.

In the first video, she was barred from entering a luxury boutique for not wearing a face mask.

In the second video similarly denied entry into another shopping centre in Kuala Lumpur for the same reason.

Internet users dubbed her as "Karen" – a generic term used to describe self-entitled white women – and she became a top trending topic on social media.

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin later said she had been issued compound notices amounting to RM3,000.

The video has been retweeted more than 2,000 times and received over 500 replies, mostly from Malaysian Twitter users.

User @itsfinnley said that while she had rights, she could not simply do as she pleases in any country.

"I bet she has a beautiful soul but she has to have common sense too. She does have a place to be accepted here but be respectful."

A significant number of replies also said that she should adhere to the law of the land as long as she was residing in Malaysia.

@doktorrezz said "She's always welcome to leave the country if she doesn't want to comply with the mask mandate.

Echoing a similar sentiment, @AinFarahana said that the country had worked very hard to get the pandemic down to a manageable level and Kerry should respect that.

"We Malaysians fight hard to fight Covid-19. And we are a country that has laws to comply. Respect our country law and the way we overcome this Covid (sic)."

Another user, @IrfanJamilludin, repeated the oft-used saying: "When in Rome, do as the Romans do."

"Please follow our rules and regulations. This is so simple, all countries have their own rules and regulations," he added.
