A University of Dayton student from Naperville was among the eight people killed during a Travis Scott concert at the Astroworld music festival in Houston Friday night.
Franco Patino, 21, was identified as one of the victims in a campuswide email from the University of Dayton, the school’s newspaper, Flyer News, reported.
According to Flyer News, Patino had been a senior mechanical engineering technology major who minored in human movement biomechanics. He belonged to Alpha Psi Lambda — a coeducational Latino fraternity — and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. He was also active at the university’s Multi-Ethnic Education and Engagement Center.
A crowd surge during a Travis Scott concert caused the deaths of at least eight people and the injuries of numerous more at Astroworld, The Associated Press reported. Officials declared the event a “mass casualty” situation just after 9 p.m.
“Everyone was passing out around you, and everyone was trying to help each other. But you just couldn’t move. You couldn’t do anything. You can’t even pick your arms up,” one festival attendee told the wire service. “It just got worse and worse.”
On Saturday, city officials said they were in the early stages of investigating the event.
Reached by the Tribune Sunday Patino’s relatives declined to comment.
In 2015, Scott pleaded guilty to misdemeanor reckless conduct after encouraging his fans to jump the barricades into the security pit during his set at Lollapalooza in Chicago that summer.
