       Lake County authorities were continuing Monday to investigate a weekend accident in Fox Lake that injured eight, including a child who was taken by helicopter to a hospital.

       A Fox Lake police spokesperson said that the condition of the child was not available, and no arrests have been made or tickets issued yet, as police continue to look into the crash.

       The accident took place at about 12:09 p.m. Sunday on Route 12 near Riverside Island Drive.

       Police said the driver of a Dodge SUV was headed north on Route 12 and failed to realize that a Toyota ahead of it had slowed, as a driver ahead of the Toyota was waiting to make a left turn into a driveway.

       To avoid hitting the Toyota, the Dodge driver swerved into the oncoming lane and collided head-on with a southbound Jeep, police said.

       There were a number of injuries, including a 3-year-old who was in the Dodge, police said. The child was taken by helicopter to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. The remaining occupants of the Dodge and the Jeep were taken to the hospital with what police said were significant, but non-life-threatening injuries.

       Authorities are not releasing the identities of the injured. Two occupants of the Toyota were treated on the scene, police said.

       Route 12 near the crash scene was shut down for more than four hours, police said.

       The accident remains under investigation by the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team and Fox Lake police. Any witnesses to the accident are asked to call (847) 587-3100.
