A Venus occultation is seen in the daytime in Koto Ward, Tokyo, on Nov. 8, 2021. From the dark part of the moon on the left side, Venus was hidden by the moon and appeared from the right side. This is a composite of nine photos taken at five-minute intervals, four from 1:32 p.m. and five from 2:38 p.m. (Mainichi/Koichiro Tezuka) =Click/tap photo for more images.
TOKYO -- A lunar occultation of Venus, in which the planet is hidden by the moon, was observed over a wide area of Japan on the afternoon of Nov. 8.
In Tokyo's Koto Ward, Venus, which had been shining near a white crescent moon in the blue sky, was slowly hidden by the dark part of the moon at around 1:46 p.m. and became invisible after about two minutes. About 50 minutes later, Venus reappeared from the bright side of the moon and could be observed with the naked eye as it shone beside the moon.
The occultation was observed east of the northeastern part of the Kyushu region in southwest Japan. According to the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, this was the first Venus occultation to be seen over a wide area in Japan since August 2012. The next one will be observable in the area south of the Tohoku region in northeastern Japan during the daytime on Sept. 17, 2036.
