'Look at how much Labour take from the unions' Raab lashes out at Tory sleaze claims

Dominic Raab brutally dismissed accusations of sleaze from Labour Party leader Keir Starmer as he insisted parties should work together to create rules to hold MPs accountable. Sir Keir hit out at Prime Minister Boris Johnson for skipping a debate on the conduct of the party in light of the Owen Paterson suspension row. But Mr Raab signalled the Conservatives will take no lesson from Labour, telling BBC Breakfast: "I don't think the politicization by the Labour Party, given how much money they take from the unions, is a particularly attractive look for Keir Starmer.

"We ought to come together to make sure there is public confidence in our institutions, including how we do our jobs as MPs and that we've got a robust system for complaints or impropriety.

"But also a fair system, that's what we should be working towards."

Asked about his views on MPs holding more than one job, Mr Raab said: "There are very strict rules on this. I think they need to be properly declared, there's the Register of Financial Interests in the House of Commons.

"I think people do want to see MPs in politics having exposure and experience coming from outside the political world, whether it's from the armed forces, from the NHS, from the world of business but it needs to be properly declared.

"Ultimately, voters will decide on their own MP whether they're spending enough time doing the job for them as their constituents.

"It's ultimately the judgement for the electors but I do think it's important, and it is respectable and legitimate, for Parliament to be exposed to the world of business, to the armed forces.

"I know there are members of the House of Commons who still work in the NHS – that exposure is important for the debates we have."
