A police officer from the town of Riverdale Park in Prince George’s County was shot and wounded Monday night, the town’s police chief said.
The incident unfolded just before 10 p.m. when the officer tried to stop a vehicle with at least one person inside who was “suspected of being involved in a shooting,” officials said. The driver fled the scene in the vehicle.

The officer was hit in an exchange of gunfire near East-West Highway and Taylor Road, said David C. Morris, the town’s police chief.
The officer was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a hospital and later released, officials said. A search for suspects in the shooting was underway, he said.

Riverdale Park is just east of the city of Hyattsville.
