A 24-year-old man who recently graduated from the University of Chicago was fatally shot on Tuesday afternoon in the Hyde Park neighborhood near the campus, according to information from the university and Chicago police.
About 1:54 p.m., the pedestrian was on a sidewalk in the 900 block of East 54th Place when a dark-colored vehicle approached, according to a police statement.
A man left the vehicle, took out a gun and demanded property. He then shot the 24-year-old in the chest, police said.
The shooter went back into the vehicle and fled west on 54th Place, according to the police statement.
The person who was shot taken to the University of Chicago Hospital where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not been released.
The University of Chicago confirmed Tuesday evening the person was a recent graduate of the school.
