KARATSU, Saga -- Vivid hues of maple and gingko leaves at the Forest of Environmental Arts, renowned for its beautiful autumn foliage, are proving popular with visitors in this southwest Japan city.

The 10-hectare privately owned forest on a hillside of 887-meter-high Mount Sakurei offers fantastic views. Autumn leaves reflected on a Japanese lacquered tabletop can be seen at the Fuyusansou cottage in the forest. The scenery has become a popular photo spot among people including the young as smartphone-taken images and videos of the views have spread on social media.

Masami Kitada, who was visiting from the neighboring Fukuoka Prefecture city of Kasuga, was thrilled by the colors, saying, "The contrast of red and green is beautiful. It was soothing."

The best time to view the autumn leaves is likely to be until the middle of November.

Admission to the forest is 700 yen (about $6.10) for high school students and older, and 300 yen (roughly $2.60) for elementary and junior high school students.
