EU warning: Poland threatens to block votes if Brussels does not bend to demands

Poland has yet to approve the EU's colossal Covid recovery package and stated it will undermine key pledges from the bloc if matters are not resolved. Waldemar Buda, Poland's deputy funds and regional policy minister claimed unless the issues are resolved by the end of the year, the state will be less keen to return to the negotiating table. He also claimed Poland has a list of measures it can use, including blocking votes on the Fit for 55 package.

The proposal aims to make the EU's climate, energy, land use, transport and taxation policies fit for reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55 percent by 2030.

Mr Buda told Politico: "There’s a regulation that says that the recovery fund should be approved in two months but we’re very calm, I’m tolerating this situation.

"It is very concerning and everyone is aware that until the end of the year, we need to find an agreement.

"We will care much less if we make a deal in January, in March, or in April, and we will be willing to propose less."

The Commission threatened to bloc the release of €36billion (£30billion) in grants and loans to the member state from the €806.9billion (£806billion) Next Generation EU package.

Brussels has blocked the release of the funds until the state changes legislation regarding the independence of the judiciary.

Such are the EU's accusations, Brussels has enacted rule of law proceedings under the Treaty of Europe.

These proceedings could lead to the suspension of Poland's voting rights.

However, Poland has refused to back down and instead criticised the Fit for 55 package.

Mr Buda said: "There are many countries unhappy with the Fit for 55 package.

"There’ll be many discussions about issues where a qualified majority will have to be built. It won’t be easy."

Poland's Prime Minister, Mateusz Morawiecki and Ursula von der Leyen clashed in Brussels over the Polish Constitutional Tribunal last month.

In a speech, Ms von der Leyen said: "The people of Poland wanted democracy they wanted the freedom to choose their government, they wanted free speech and free media, they wanted an end to corruption and they wanted independent courts to protect their rights.

“This is what Europe is about and that is what Europe stands for.

“The recent ruling of the Polish Constitutional Court puts much of it into question.”

However, Poland's Prime Minister fired back and reiterated his country's sovereignty within the bloc.

He added: "The people of Poland wanted democracy they wanted the freedom to choose their government, they wanted free speech and free media, they wanted an end to corruption and they wanted independent courts to protect their rights.

“This is what Europe is about and that is what Europe stands for.

“The recent ruling of the Polish Constitutional Court puts much of it into question.”
