GEORGE TOWN: Floods inundated several low-lying areas here following non-stop rain while in Kedah, more than 200 residents in two districts were evacuated to relief centres.

       According to Penang welfare and environment committee chairman Phee Boon Poh, Jalan P. Ramlee, Jalan Perak, Kampung Masjid, Kampung Makam and Kampung Masjid Hashim Yahya in Datuk Keramat were among the areas affected after rain fell non-stop since midnight on Thursday.

       “Several areas in the city centre were also flooded,” he said when contacted.

       Social media was abuzz with photos and videos of flash floods in the city centre.

       Phee said the situation was under control and all state agencies had been alerted.

       “The situation will be monitored from time to time and so far, no temporary relief centres have been opened,” he added.

       Phee also said the high tide had receded but could reach a high of 1.2m later that night.

       A Civil Defence Force spokesman said it had deployed personnel to the affected areas and the situation was manageable so far.

       “Kampung Masjid was more affected as there was an overflow from a nearby river. Our personnel are on the ground to oversee the situation,” he said.

       In Alor Setar, Bernama reported that the number of flood evacuees in Kedah dropped slightly to 247 people yesterday morning, from 256 people the night before.

       Kedah Civil Defence Force disaster management committee secretariat chief Major (PA) Mohd Muaz Mohd Yusof said four relief centres were operating in the Pendang and Kubang Pasu districts.

       As the weather was favourable on Thursday, some victims were allowed to return home after the flood waters receded, but yesterday morning, the skies were cloudy again, he added.
