JOHOR BARU: A total of 11 people have been arrested by the police here for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Johor traffic police chief Supt M. Kumarasan said that they were arrested during the Ops Mabuk and Ops Samseng Jalan operations conducted simultaneously throughout Johor.

"The operations, which took place between 10pm on Friday (Nov 12) and 1.30am on Saturday (Nov 13) involved 99 policemen, including 16 senior officers.

"The focus of the operations was to take stern action against drunk drivers and mat rempits (illegal motorcycle racers).

"Following checks at the roadblocks, we arrested 11 individuals between the ages of 27 and 53 years old as tests showed they had consumed alcohol above the permitted level," he said in a statement on Saturday (Nov 13).

Supt Kumarasan added that some 17 motorcycles were also seized during the operations under Section 64 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for mat rempit activities.

"During the operations, we also issued a total of 230 summonses for various offenses following checks on some 736 individuals and 573 vehicles," he said.

He also reminded the public to continue adhering to the Covid-19 standard operating procedures under Phase Four of the National Recovery Plan.

"Do not get involved in any immoral activities that could lead to the increase of Covid-19 cases.

"The police would continue to hunt down those who are stubborn and continue committing offences under the Road Transport Act 1987," he added.
