KUALA LUMPUR: The Covid-19 pandemic has not shaken the government's resolve to protect children and promote their well-being, says Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

"In line with the Malaysian Family and Malaysia's appointment to the Human Rights Council, the government remains committed to child protection, especially vulnerable children and victims of sexual assault and domestic violence," said The Prime Minister.

He said that a concerted effort from the public and private sectors as well as society at large is necessary to create a better and safer place for children.

"We must work together as the Malaysian Family to achieve this," he said at the World Children's Day celebration on Wednesday (Nov 17).

Ismail Sabri said that Malaysia is also steadfast in strengthening all the rights of children, with the help of not just local bodies, agencies and authorities, but also with international organisations under the United Nations.

"Also, let us not forget about the protection of children in detention. Malaysia's commitment in tackling this issue can be seen in the establishment of the Alternative to Detention pilot programme," he said.

"I firmly believe governments are responsible for protecting all children on their territories, regardless nationality, race, religion, birth or other status," added Ismail Sabri.

He said that the best interests of the child must be taken into foremost consideration especially when addressing the needs of vulnerable children, including refugee children.

Ismail Sabri added that this is in line with the principles of the Convention of the Rights of the Child and said that Malaysia remains committed to explore alternatives to detention for children in Malaysia.

"I strongly believe that every child has the basic right to education, thrive, be carefree, grow and develop into individuals who can reach their full potential and pursue their dreams," he said.

"Therefore, we all have an important role to play in creating a good environment and building a better place for the children," added Ismail Sabri.
