A motorway crash has led to huge queues in rush hour traffic on the M6 in Lancashire this morning. All traffic was being held on the southbound carriageway at Charnock Richard services.

No details have been released on the number of vehicles involved or any injuries.

According to traffic monitoring service Inrix, one lane was initially shut just after 7.40am.

All traffic was held between junction 28 for Leyland and junction 27 for Standish.

Heavy congestion can be seen in motorway camera images of the area.

One lane has now reopened on the M6 southbound.

A recent report from Inrix said: "Two lanes closed and queueing traffic due to accident on M6 Southbound at Charnock Richard Services.

"Lanes, two and three (of three) remain closed. Traffic was held between 07:40 and 08:00 between J28 (Leyland) and J27 (Standish)."

Recovery work is still ongoing while two lanes remain shut.

Drivers have been told by Highways England to expect up to 40 minutes of delays and five miles of congestion.

An update at 8.35am said: "2 Lanes (of 3) closed on the #M6 southbound between J28 #Leyland and J27 #Standish due to a collision.

"There is approx. 5 miles of congestion which is likely to add around 40 mins onto usual journey times."

There are also delays on the M61 and M65 in Lancashire due to separate incidents.

Just yesterday the M6 was hit by further queuing after a van crashed into a barrier on the M1.

One lane of the motorway was blocked, causing three miles of traffic queueing.

The incident took place on the M1 Southbound between J19 M6 (Catthorpe Interchange) and J18 A5 (Rugby) early yesterday morning.

The incident impacted traffic on all surrounding roads, with up to six miles of queues on some roads.
