'Show some respect' Lindsay Hoyle erupts at jeering MPs as Commons descends into chaos

Sir Lindsay Hoyle opened up Prime Minister's Question by making reference to David Amess' mass which was held the day before and remarked he wanted to see a continuation of the decorum showed there. However, Boris Johnson's recent CBI speech disaster energised backbench MPs who repeatedly jeered and ridiculed the Prime Minister for his actions. As Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer began asking questions, Sir Lindsay had enough and rose from his seat to calm things down and to remember David Amess.

During a tense grilling on social care, Sir Keir repeatedly pressured Mr Johnson to answer for abandoning promises on selling homes.

The energised Commons roared as Sir Keir struggled to be heard and mocked Mr Johnson by saying his MPs had bothered to turn up this time.

The Labour leader made reference to the voting of the social care reforms which saw many Conservatives not turn up to vote in person.

But as tempers began to rise, Sir Lindsay sought to put a stop to the jeering and told the House: “I don’t think I need any further.

“Yesterday we had a very good example being at its best in that church, in that cathedral.

“Please, let’s show some respect, I want to be able to hear not only the Prime Minister but the leader of the opposition.

“Shouting each other down doesn’t do you or your constituents any good.

“We need to hear the questions and I certainly need to hear the answers.

“And if anybody doesn’t like it, please leave now.”

Sir Lindsay opened up PMQs by referring to David Amess’ mass the day before and wanted to see the attitude there reflected in the Commons.

But things kicked off quickly once Mr Johnson rose from his seat with Labour MPs heard insulting him over his CBI speech.

Labour Chair of the Committees on Standards and Privileges Chris Bryant stood up to ask a question but some backbenchers could be heard shouting “forgive me!”

The jeer referenced Mr Johnson scrambling for his notes at the CBI and repeatedly apologising for his gaffe.

Mr Johnson delivered a disastrous speech at the CBI annual conference where he lost his place in his speech then discussed his trip to Peppa Pig World.

While part of a wider point on British creativity, many commentators and media outlets have ridiculed the Prime Minister for his presentation.

Mr Johnson also made reference to communist Lenin to British industry leaders and made car noises when compared electric vehicles and petrol engines.
