NEW Covid laws mean face masks must be worn in a number of indoor settings from today.

But as well as the ones you might expect - like shops, public transport and hairdressers - there are some that may surprise you.

Ministers have decided not to make masks mandatory in pubs, restaurants and cafes as the primary activity involves eating and drinking - difficult while your mouth is covered.

However, coverings must be worn in venues that do not have seating areas designed for food or drink.

This includes takeaways - so you must mask up when heading to your local chippy or kebab shop, as long as there is nowhere to sit.

       Driving lessons and tests

The latest legislation also states masks are required during driving lessons and tests.

This includes vehicles of any class - and applies to both student and instructor.

You do not, however, need to be covered up in your own vehicle.

       Tattoo and piercing studios

Anywhere providing personal care and beauty treatments must ask customers to wear a mask on entry, and keep it on during their time there.

As well as the more obvious venues like barbers and hair salons, this also includes tattoo and piercing studios.

Although this is unclear in the written legislation, it is presumed clients can remove their masks if their treatment or service requires it.

The new face mask rules form part of the government's strategy to tackle a winter surge in Covid cases - and the much-feared Omicron variant.

Restrictions on international travel have been tightened, with all people arriving in Britain from abroad having to take a PCR test, and quarantining until they get a negative result.

Ten more countries were also placed on the UK's red list, with only British or Irish citizens and UK residents allowed to enter Britain from these destinations.

The list of destinations currently banned includes South Africa, where the rapidly-spreading and potentially vaccine resistant Omicron is thought to have originated.

Self-isolation has also been brought back for anyone who comes into contact with someone who tests positive for Omicron - regardless of their vaccination status.

The face mask rules apply to all - unless they are exempt.

This includes children under the age of 11, people with breathing problems and adults with physical disabilities.

Carrying an exemption card or badge is a personal choice and is not required by law.
