Prince Edward 'broke the rules' as he defied Prince Charles order on William and Harry

Prince Edward angered his brother Prince Charles after he "broke the rules". Royal experts on True Royalty TV's The Royal Beat cited the row when discussing the continuing fallout from the BBC's recent documentary about Harry and William's relationships with the press. Royal biographer Angela Levin brought up the fact that Prince Edward, and not the press, was the one who violated William's privacy while at university.

Discussing the BBC documentary, Royal Beat host Kate Thornton said: "A private investigator told the BBC that he wanted to apologise to Chelsy Davy, Harry's ex-girlfriend.

"And also apologise for his contribution to what he said was stealing his youth."

Ms Levin hit back at this claim, saying: "I don't think you can steal his youth because all the press agreed not to interfere.

"They agreed not to go and take any sort of film or speak to William and Harry while they were at school."

She added: "Nobody except Prince Edward broke the rules, when he went and tried to do a documentary at the university."

Author and former Royal Editor Duncan Larcombe added: "They were left alone by the press at school and full-time education.

"That was a very well-organised, well-policed arrangement between the press and the palace. It was a working agreement."

Ms Levin's remarks reference an incident in September 2001, when a camera crew working for Edward's TV company at the time, Arendt Production, was caught filming at William's university.

The incident sparked a furious public row and was understood to have hurt and angered Charles.

At the time, St James's Palace said the intrusion was "disappointing" after intensive efforts to protect the privacy of William.

It is thought that William himself contacted his father to complain after the camera crew was spotted as he emerged from a lecture.

The incident took place just two days after the then-19-year-old arrived at St Andrew's University.

Andrew Neil, who at the time was the university's rector, said: "We have got to make sure there is not one rule for the press and one rule for Prince Edward's company."

Just a few months after the incident, in March 2002, Edward stepped down as managing director of Ardent to concentrate on his public royal duties.

Ardent Productions was a television company established by the Earl of Wessex in 1993.
