       OSAKA -- Japanese cosmetics firm Mandom Corp. is voluntarily recalling four scalp care products -- a total of 1.08 million items including promotional samples -- after reports that they damaged the health of children allergic to eggs.

       The items are all quasi-pharmaceutical products and contain a substance called lysozyme hydrochloride derived from egg white.

       According to the Osaka-based company, it received three reports of health damage caused by egg allergies between March 2020 and September 2021. Children aged between 2 and 10 years old complained of symptoms such as breathing difficulties, nettle rash and vomiting. One also suffered anaphylactic shock.

       The products subject to recall are aerosol sprays. The items initially carried a notice that they contain an ingredient originating from eggs. Following the health damage reports, Mandom added a note in February 2021 that they possibly cause allergic reactions.

       The company's public relations department explained, "Following health damage consultations, we started alerting consumers via our website in July 2020, and added a label to products that were shipped in 2021, but we have judged that strengthening written warnings alone is not an adequate response."
