Covid POLL: Should people be asked to include their vaccination status on their CV? VOTE

The topic of mandatory vaccination has been highly contested, and the Prime Minister announced on Wednesday that a “national conversation” would need to be held on the matter. During the briefing, the Prime Minister said he did not want Britain to be a "society and a culture where we force people to get vaccinated", adding: "I don't think that's ever been the way we do things in this country."

       ------------------

But he went on to say that if vaccines are shown to be capable of "holding" Omicron then "there is going to come a point" when "we are going to have to have a conversation about ways in which we deal with this pandemic".

He said: "I don't believe we can keep going indefinitely with non-pharmaceutical interventions, restrictions on people's way of life, just because a substantial proportion of the population still, sadly, has not got vaccinated."

Covid vaccination has been voluntary since the jab roll out began in December 2020.

The move to mandate vaccination for healthcare workers was criticised by many who felt the rule was an infringement to their bodily rights.

Teresa Budrey, regional director of the Royal College of Nursing in the East Midlands, said: “We don’t believe that making vaccination compulsory is the right way to go.

“We question whether taking away someone’s right to choose whether they are vaccinated in order to work will ultimately improve uptake.

“We think the best way to ensure staff have the vaccination if they’re reluctant is to focus on educating them and reinforcing the benefits of vaccination as opposed to making it mandatory.

“We think the Government should give some very serious thought to the risk that mandating it will further marginalise those who are vaccine-hesitant."

She added: “The pandemic has exposed that NHS and social care services are chronically short of staff, and those services and the patients who rely on them cannot afford to lose the capacity and expertise of staff who don’t want to be vaccinated.”

Data published by NHS England show that over 93 percent of NHS trust healthcare staff have had their first dose of the covid vaccine and 90 percent have had their second, but this figure varies across the country.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid said that in some trusts the figure was closer to 80 percent.

In London, for example, NHS England data show that just over 84 percent of staff have had both doses.

Other employers have also made vaccination mandatory across the world.

Companies that have banned unvaccinated employees from the office include: Twitter, Uber, McDonald’s, The Walt Disney Company, The New York Times, Morgan Stanley, Microsoft, Google, Facebook, American Express, and many more.

Netflix have even mandated vaccination for all cast members on set.

“I read a CV yesterday and the first line was: ‘I’m a bright, enthusiastic, and fully vaccinated individual.’

“Is this the world we live in now? Is this critical information? Would you not employ someone because they aren’t vaccinated?”

According to Laura Kearsley at Nelsons law firm, an employer can introduce clauses in contracts of employment that require their workforce to be fully vaccinated.

They can do this because all businesses have a legal duty to provide their employees with a safe working environment.

Ms Kearsley writes: “Should an employer introduce measures that require workers to be fully vaccinated and an employee still refuses, depending on the circumstances, it could result in the employee being redeployed to a different role or they could be dismissed.”

She adds that it is lawful for an employer not to employ someone who is not vaccinated as long as the employer does not discriminate against any disabled candidates who are unable to have the vaccine as a result of a disability.
