'Don't need any help from you!' Lindsay Hoyle shuts down SNP MP in furious swipe

Sir Lindsay Hoyle lashed out at the conduct of SNP MP Angus MacNeil as the Speaker of the House of Commons attempted to bring MPs into order ahead of Prime Minister Questions. Sir Lindsay began to make an announcement regarding a sign language translation for the upcoming proceedings. However, the SNP MP caught the ire of the speaker and Sir Lindsay paused his address to give Mr MacNeil a stern telling-off.

Sir Lindsay told MPs: "Before we come to Prime Minister's questions I would like to point out that the British..."

The Speaker stopped before turning on Mr MacNeil.

He blasted: "Mr MacNeil, I don't need any help from you!

"This is an important message those people are watching. Before I come to the Prime Minister's questions, I'd like to point out that the British Sign Language Interpretation of proceedings is available to watch on the Parliament Live TV."

The clash came as Boris Johnson was about to face MPs over the claims Downing Street broke covid rules last Christmas by hosting a party at No.10.

A video has emerged from Downing Street showing the Prime Ministers's then spokesperson Allegra Stratton laughing with colleagues about the bash at which there was "definitely no social distancing".

At Prime Minister's Questions, Mr Johnson said: "I understand and share the anger up and down the country at seeing No 10 staff seeming to make light of lockdown measures, and I can understand how infuriating it must be to think that people who have been setting the rules have not been following the rules because I was also furious to see that clip.

"I apologise unreservedly for the offence that it has caused up and down the country and I apologise for the impression that it gives.

"But I repeat that I have been repeatedly assured since these allegations emerged that there was no party and that no Covid rules were broken, and that is what I have been repeatedly assured."

SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford in turn demanded the Prime Minister's resignation, saying he "can no longer lead on the most pressing issue facing these islands".

Mr Blackford said: "Trust and leadership is a matter of life and death. Downing Street wilfully broke the rules and mocked the sacrifices we have all made, shattering the public trust.

"The Prime Minister is responsible for losing the trust of the people.

"The Prime Minister has a duty, the only right and moral choice left to him: it is for his resignation. When can we expect it?"

The leaked footage from No 10's £2.6 million press briefing room emerged on Tuesday night which showed Ms Stratton laughing as she appeared to rehearse answers to questions over the lockdown-busting Christmas party.

The video, which is reported to be from December 22 last year, refers to a party on "Friday" - which would have been December 18, the same day The Daily Mirror reported there was a staff party where games were played, food and drinks were served, and revelries went on past midnight.
