Officers were called to the prison at 3.33pm on Thursday afternoon following concerns for the welfare of a prisoner, Kent Online reports.
An ambulance service also attended the scene and shortly after arriving, the medical crew declared the inmate dead.
His next of kin have been informed, police confirmed.
The investigation continues.
This isn't the first time HMP Maidstone prisoners have hit the headlines while incarcerated.
In 2019 an inmate was jailed for an additional three years after he violently attacked three prison guards.
