KUALA LUMPUR: A motion for the proposed redevelopment in Kampung Sungai Baru by private developers to be debated in the Dewan Rakyat’s Special Chambers has been allowed on Monday (Dec 13).

Khalid Abdul Samad (PH-Shah Alam) said he had filed a motion under Standing Order 18(1) and 18(2) for it to be debated in the House.

“The matter involves public interest as it involves Kampung Sungai Baru landowners who have owned and stayed on the land for several generations,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat.

“The matter needs to be expedited as landowners have been issued an investigation notice by the Federal Territories Land and Mines Office.

“The landowners also face tremendous pressure from the government which used the Land Acquisition Act 1960 during the Covid-19 pandemic period to acquire the land in order for it to be developed by private developers.

“This must be stopped immediately to protect landowners who will either be directly or indirectly affected by the land acquisition process,” added the Shah Alam MP and former Federal Territories minister.

To this, Deputy Speaker Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon read out a reply from the Speaker’s office, which allowed the motion to be debated in the Special Chambers at 2.30pm on Monday.
