SIBU: Former Dudong assemblyman Datuk Tiong Thai King (pic) has appealed to voters to vote for Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) for a better tomorrow for the State.

In an advertorial in the local dailies, Tiong said looking at the changes of government at the national level and the Sarawak election today, he firmly believed that voting for GPS, a moderate inclusive, diverse but unified, harmonious and cooperative government will be crucial for Sarawak so as to ensure a rapid pace of development and progress.

Saying that he had retired from politics after 30 years of involvement, he said the future of the state is in the hands of Sarawakians.

"And we must reject the transfer of racist ideology and religious extremism from West Malaysia to the state," he advised.

Tiong also praised Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg as "a good leader who is kind, big-hearted and who will treat Sarawakians of all races and walks of life fairly and equally."

"His political ideology of putting people and development first is deeply-rooted and warmly received by Sarawakians of all races," he said.

Tiong said under Abang Johari, the state is gradually seeing the return of Sarawak's rights, respect and status.

This could be seen in the past three years, the successful reclamation of RM7bil in oil and gas royalties.

Tiong was formerly with Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) before defecting to United People's Party (UPP), a BN-friendly party then.

UPP was later rebranded to become Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB).

He said he felt "resigned and helpless and was deeply pained" when he found himself in the Opposition seat in the State Legislative Assembly.

He said he had no other option but to leave politics "just like a little bird which has left its erstwhile nest."

Tiong has served as senator, member of Parliament, council chairman, and state assemblyman.
