A Waukegan man has been charged in the September killing of a Zion man in an ambush-style shooting sparked by an altercation at a Wisconsin bar several hours earlier, authorities said Tuesday.

Zion police said Tuesday that Tavares Reed, 28, has been charged with first-degree murder in the killing of Che Hearns, who was shot to death inside his apartment in the 1700 block of Joanna Avenue, at around 7:30 a.m. on Sept. 17.

Several hours before the shooting, Reed and Hearns, 31, had a “brief but heated encounter” at a tavern in Kenosha, authorities said. Reed is alleged to have gone later to Hearns’ apartment building, police said, and fired several rounds into Hearns’ apartment from the lawn, according to reports.

Police did not provide details about what may have caused the altercation.

Reed, who is on parole for a weapons violation, fled the state immediately after the shooting, police said. Authorities obtained a warrant for Reed’s arrest about a month later, but police were unable to locate him.

However, they said they received information that Reed had returned to Illinois, and he was arrested Saturday without incident in Chicago.

He was awaiting transportation Tuesday to Lake County. The warrant for his arrest carried a $5 million bail.

According to court and Illinois Department of Corrections records, Reed had been paroled from prison in July after serving a sentence for possession of a firearm by a felon.
