Fergus Walsh and BBC Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg spoke with GP Silvana McCaffrey about the latest booster vaccine roll-out to find out which vaccine offers more protection against the latest Covid variant Omicron. On Sunday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson advised all Brits over the age of 18 to go and get their vaccine booster jabs, in hopes of significantly getting three doses to most of the adult population in the UK before the end of December. Mr Walsh discussed latest data on the impact booster jabs have on the Omicron variant, reporting new studies have shown a swift increase in protection after the third dose.

Mr Walsh told Newscast: "Ok so a month, 28 days after you've had your booster dose, whether you had two AstraZeneca's to start with or two Pfizer's to start with – the evidence that we've got is for the Pfizer booster but Moderna is also there and likely to equally if not better...

"It cuts your risk of getting asymptomatic infection with Omicron by between 70-75 percent

"Now, Silvana was saying 'well it takes a couple of weeks for that to kick in'. In fact, it kicks the protection much quicker than your second dose did of your primary."

The BBC Medical Editor said: "There's a really very very steep rise in the booster in the antibody levels, so within a week of having your booster, you'll be in a much better place within four weeks you'll be in an even better place.

"But we must keep stressing that if you've only had two doses it probably won't be enough to stop an Omicron infection, but it should be enough to stop a serious infection.

"And I would like to share some really positive news from South Africa, Shabir Madhi who is a Professor of Vaccinology in Johannesburg, very respected, was talking this morning on the news channel about the wave of infection there which sort of pre-dates ours by about three weeks.

"They're saying they had a massive wave it was infecting people who had previously had Covid, it was infecting people who had previously been vaccinated, but it was leading to around one-tenth of a conversion rate of cases going into hospital compared to Delta, so that is really very good news."

As the Government has been pushing Brits to get their booster shots, they have looked to the military to help roll out the booster plan.

Around 600 soldiers have been made available to administer vaccinations for the NHS, and they are currently working in small groups across the country.

When asked about the new booster roll-out, Health and Social Care Secretary Sajid Javid said: “We are turbocharging our COVID-19 booster programme to offer every adult in England a vaccine by the end of the year to protect people from the Omicron variant."

Mr Javid added: “Building our defences through boosters is a hugely important national mission and it’s brilliant to see the military supporting our NHS staff in our race against the virus.

“Please get boosted now to top-up your immunity and keep yourself and your loved ones safe this winter.”
