One million children under five at risk of dying - Help save an Afghan child this winter

And today they launch an appeal to deliver urgent help to prevent the humanitarian catastrophe. The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Afghanistan Crisis Appeal will provide funds to help those in the country suffering from conflict, economic collapse, drought, famine and Covid. Charities involved include Save the Children, the International Rescue Committee, Red Cross and the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development.

They say a million children under five are at risk of dying there over the next three months. And eight million people are facing famine. The appeal will fund DEC charities to provide emergency food and nutrition for children, support healthcare facilities, provide winter kits to help families stay warm in temperatures likely to hit -12C, supply clean drinking water and protect women and girls.

Public donations will be matched pound-for-pound by the Government - up to a total of £10million Saleh Saeed, the CEO of DEC, said: "We urge people to donate to help families feed their children, protect themselves against freezing temperatures and to provide vital medical supplies to deal with malnutrition, hypothermia and acute respiratory infections."

Just £10 can provide treatment for three weeks to a malnourished child, while £20 can feed a family for a week.
