SHAH ALAM: Police have arrested two men who allegedly impersonated civil servants and extorted money from foreigners in Kuala Langat.
District police chief Supt Ahmad Ridhwan Mohd Nor @ Saleh said in a statement on Friday (Dec 17) the two suspects, local men in their early 30s, were arrested between 1.45pm and 4.15pm on Wednesday (Dec 15) along Jalan Sungai Klang and Jalan Kapar near here.
Supt Ahmad Ridhwan said the arrests followed a police report by an Indian national who said he was detained by two men at Taman Muhibbah in Banting, Kuala Langat on Dec 8.
"One of the suspects introduced himself as an Immigration officer from Shah Alam and asked the victim, who worked as a helper at a restaurant, to show them his passport.
"When the victim failed to produce his passport, he was then forced into a car and driven around Klang.
"In the car, one suspect hit the victim with a shoe before asking for RM3,000 by calling the victim's employer (and asking) if he wanted his employee to be released," Supt Ahmad Ridhwan said.
He added that the employer then transferred RM1,500 to an account before the victm was released in front of a supermarket in Klang.
According to Supt Ahmad Ridhwan, the suspects’ modus operandi was to target foreigners who were alone and take the victims to Klang in order to extort money from them.
"With the arrest, we believe we have solved nine cases in the district.
"Both suspects have criminal records. They have been remanded for seven days from yesterday (Thursday, Dec 16).
"The case is being investigated under Section 395/397 and Section 170 of the Penal Code,” he added. – Bernama
