‘Don’t be complacent with drop in new cases’

BERA: Even though the number of new Covid-19 cases in the country has shown a decline in the past few days compared to during the movement control order phase, the Prime Minister has reminded the people not to be complacent.

Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said everyone should be aware that Malaysia is still not safe from the coronavirus although new daily infections have gone down thanks to various methods such as the country’s vaccination drive and the enforcement of the enhanced MCO.

“There were hundreds of cases reported when the first MCO was announced and I promised the people that when business activities are allowed to reopen, we will not close them again.

“To ensure that the MCO will not be reintroduced, we must comply with the SOP (standard operating procedure).

“The government has promised that there will not be an MCO like before but if there is a sudden surge and increase in the number of cases due to this new variant, it may be difficult for us to maintain this situation,” Bernama quoted the Prime Minister as saying when he officiated at the Bera Umno division’s delegates’ meeting here yesterday.

He said compliance with the SOP, especially in the use of face masks and avoidance of congested areas, must continue to be practised, particularly after the second case of the Omicron variant was reported in Malaysia recently.

Ismail Sabri said Malaysia must also learn from the experience of foreign countries that had almost succeeded in curbing the spread of Covid-19, but eventually faced an increase in new cases and deaths due to SOP non-compliance.
