Liz Truss was brought in as chief Brexit negotiator after Lord Frost's departure from the role was announced at the weekend. An official Downing Street statement was released announcing her appointment as Foreign Sec. Ms Truss said: “Pleased to be taking on responsibility for the EU negotiations and wider relationship with the excellent Chris Heaton-Harris.”

Britons have urged the Foreign Secretary to get straight to work on Northern Ireland Protocol negotiations and trigger Article 16 immediately.

Express.co.uk reader DaemonStorm wrote: "More Sefcovic and EU lies.

“He talks about urgent solutions for medicines being sent to NI, but answer me this, who stopped the medicines from going to NI in the first place.

       “The EU..... hypocrites.”

PT19 wrote: “Enact article 16 immediately.

“Disinfect our country from the EU politburo irrevocably.

“It should have been done a year ago.

“Then get on with scrapping the WA, the "trade & cooperation agreement" (never was one so misnamed) and moving to trading under the auspices of the WTO at last. Rid us of the EU for good.

“We'd rather work with Vladimir than Brussels now.”

But recent comments made by one EU official to the Guardian seems to suggest there is an element of anxiety with the new appointment.

They told the Guardian: “Hopefully the new negotiator will be more pragmatic, making good relations with the EU and its member states a priority over the pursuit of a pure, antagonistic Brexit - we’re not holding our breath.”

David Bannerman, ex-Conservative MEP for the East of England, spoke of what he expects to happen now that Ms Truss has been appointed.

Mr Bannerman tweeted: "Don’t expect any weakening of lines on Protocol. Article 16 beckons."

Speaking about the reasons for his departure, Lord Frost cited the "direction of travel" of the Government, as well as fears over "coercive" Covid measures and the wish for the UK to become a "lightly regulated, low-tax" economy as his reasons for leaving his role.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid described the former Foreign Sec as a “man of principle” following his departure.

Mr Javid said: "We've had one very disappointing election result and from that you cannot take away the ability of Boris Johnson to win election after election."

Tory MP Peter Bone declared he was in agreement with the comments made by Lord Frost about the direction in which the Government was going.

Mr Bone said: "Boris has led this country exceptionally well.

“But what comes next? And that's what I think Lord Frost is talking about.

"I think part of that rebellion of 100 Conservative MPs was due to the fact we want to see the Prime Minister move to a more conservative agenda."

Speaking about the “coercive” coronavirus measures which may be introduced, he added: I've cancelled all in-person meetings and the get-together with staff.

“I won't be going to crowded places, but leave that up to the individual to make that decision, don't have the state telling me what I have to do every day, and so in that regard, yes I'm with Lord Frost."
