Princess Anne gave Princess Diana special gift on first royal Christmas

Over the years, the Royal Family has often let slip about the tradition of giving each other joke gifts as presents. Their traditional royal Christmas is based at Sangringham, Norfolk, where festivities start a few days before Christmas Day.

According to the Queen's former chef, Darren McGrady, the Windsors honour their German heritage by opening presents following afternoon tea on Christmas Eve instead of on Christmas Day.

The family have had the gift theme as "cheap and cheerful" for many years.

Prince Harry once gave a hat to his grandmother Queen Elizabeth that read "Ain't life a b****".

Harry in return was given a "grow your own girlfriend" kit, courtesy of his sister-in-law, Kate Middleton.

The fun tradition dates as far back as the 1980s, when Princess Diana was a member of the Royal Family.

It was reported that on Diana's first royal Christmas at Sandringham, Prince Charles didn't mention the tradition.

This resulted in Diana buying her sister-in-law, Princess Anne, a cashmere sweater.

In return, Princess Anne gave Diana a toilet paper holder for her bathroom.

The following year, now being clued in on the joke, Diana bought Sarah Ferguson a leopard print bath mat.

Royal Christmas time is full of traditions. Every year since 1952, the Queen has given an annual Christmas broadcast to the Commonwealth.

During the speech, she reflects on the past year and looks ahead to the future.

Since 1957, the broadcast has been televised, and the whole Royal Family are said to watch it together on Christmas Day.

Each year on Christmas Day, the Queen is joined by her family for a church service at St Mary Magdalene on the Sandringham Estate.

The royal traditions won't be going ahead this year, as the Queen has opted for a quieter Christmas at Windsor Castle due to the pandemic.
