A strong earthquake, 5.2 on the Richter scale, was recorded off Crete on Sunday afternoon. According to the country’s Geodynamic Institute, the earthquake occurred 46 km south of Kassos, while the focal depth was 8.9 km.

According to the website Volcano Discovery, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km.

Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface.

They added: “Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.”

Volcano Discover added weak shaking might have been felt in Arvanitochori, located just 43 km from the epicenter of the quake.

In October, Crete saw a large 6.4 magnitude earthquake strike alongside warnings of a tsunami.

The quake struck the east coast of the island at a depth of 10km under the village of Palekastro, according to the US Geological Survey.

The quake was also felt on Greek islands to the east of Crete, including Karpathos, Kassos and Rhodes.
