In a touching tribute to her late husband, Prince Philip, Her Majesty wore a stunning piece of sapphire chrysanthemum jewellery. However, eagle-eyed fans noted the brooch was also worn on the couple’s honeymoon in 1947 and at their 60th wedding anniversary.

Ingrid Seward, author of The Queen’s Speech, said this year’s speech is likely to be very different from previous ones.

She said: “It is incredibly unusual for the Queen to be personal in her Christmas speech.

“She often mentions the key news events and any disasters but it is never personal and about her.”

Seward also said that the monarch may discuss her late husband with reference to recent events around the COP26 summit in Glasgow.

She said: “Maybe this time she will speak about Prince Philip and even talk about how her husband was a pioneer with environmental causes —- coming in a year where we had COP26 in Glasgow.”

A single image released by the Queen shows her in a Christmas red Angela Kelly wool shift dress as she filmed the speech at Windsor Castle around three weeks ago.

The framed photo of the Diamond Wedding couple together in 2007 appears on the monarch’s desk during the pre-recorded address to the nation.

In contrast to previous years when many images of her family were visible this is the sole image.

Her brooch was presented to the then Princess Elizabeth in 1946 before she wore it for a photo in Broadlands, Hampshire shortly before her wedding the following year.

It was on show again when the Royal couple recreated the Broadlands image for their 60th anniversary.

Last year the Queen wore it for their 73rd and final anniversary at Windsor Castle.

It was announced on Wednesday that the Queen has agreed to hold a service of thanksgiving to honour Prince Philip in the spring.
