A MUM-OF-TWO says her mouldy council flat is a "death trap" infested with rats which poo on her kids' pillows and attack her dog.

The mum, 29 - who asked not to be named - said her kids, aged three and one, were rushed to hospital after rat faeces "under their heads" gave them "serious chest infections" at home in Rotherham, Yorkshire.

She fears the mould-covered property is a "death trap waiting to happen" after the vermin gnawed through the electrics, "destroyed" her fridge and attacked her dog.

The property's paintwork is stained yellow from rat urine - and it reeks when the animals die in the wall cavities, she added.

The mum - a domestic abuse survivor who moved into the house to escape a violent ex - told the Sun: "I am at breaking point to be honest.

"It is a death trap waiting to happen. There is going to be a gas leak or the electricity will go out.

"I noticed the fridge freezer wasn't working. The rats had been gnawing at the plug and there was rat faeces all over the back of it.

"I have no fridge freezer now because the rats destroyed it and I am cleaning and cleaning because the rats get in.

"One night, my daughter was in bed screaming because there was a monster in her room and it was a rat.

"It messes with your head, when you are laying in bed thinking: 'will the rats bite me or my kids?' I am up all night checking on the kids.

"The rats have attacked my dog and bit him on the paw. I had to rush him to the vet because his feet swelled like a balloon.

"He could have died, he's on medication now.

"They are in the cavity walls too - I hear them in there. I think the rats have died in the walls because the house stinks. I am constantly buying air freshener."

She said the rats and mould left her kids needing urgent hospital treatment.

The mum added: "There is mould growing on the mattress where my kids sleep.

"As soon as we moved in, my kids were retching.

"They were waking up in the middle of the night and spewing in the bed.

"We rushed them to the hospital because they were burning up and they were both diagnosed with serious chest infections.

It messes with your head, when you are laying in bed thinking: 'will the rats bite me or my kids?' I am up all night checking on the kids.

"Living with rat faeces under their heads and mould and damp did it."

The mould is caused by damp coming in via the same holes used by the rats to get in and out.

The mum has been forced to throw away her kids' toys after they too became coated in the black mould.

She added: "We have chest infections all the time. My daughter is waking up screaming and she is not sleeping.

"Her life has been ruined. It is horrible for them to go through. They aren't safe.

"They can't play with their toys. They don't understand why their toys get chucked away. They can't go in their room because of the smell of the rat faeces."

The mum has been left at "breaking point" and is desperate for housing association Sanctuary Homes to move her somewhere else.

She was placed in the property as an emergency in September after fleeing her abusive ex.

"The first night I moved in I heard something running across the ceiling. I rang Sanctuary up and I said 'I think the house has rats'," she said.

"I was crying because I had literally just moved in.

"About three weeks later they sent pest control out to put some bait in the attic.

"The attic was covered in rat faeces and urine. They had bitten through the lights.

       LIVING NIGHTMARE

"I begged them to fix it. I wasn't sleeping because they were keeping me up at night."

Sanctuary put her in a hotel with her kids for three-and-a-half weeks so that workmen could fix the issue, but not long after she got back the rats returned.

"There is mould growing on the mattress and where my kids sleep.

"My fingers are nearly bleeding because I am scrubbing so much mould away.

"I have had to scrub my mattress with bleach. There is mould on the wall where I put my son's cot."

The mum is now at "breaking point" over the issues.

"I did have a breakdown, my mum had to come and get me. My kids had a rubbish Christmas.

"I am at breaking point to be honest. I have to get up early in the morning to scrub the house down.

"I am constantly cleaning and sanitising the kids."

A Sanctuary spokesperson said: "We have been carrying out work to resolve issues at the property, including employing a specialist contractor for rat treatment, and supported the tenant and her family to move into temporary accommodation while this took place.

"The tenant and her family have now returned home and we’ll work with them to resolve any outstanding issues."
