KOTA KINABALU: The appointment of a deputy prime minister from the Borneo states should be considered by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, says a political analyst.
Sabah UiTM lecturer and political observer Tony Paridi Bagang said this would show recognition of Sabah and Sarawak's contributions to the Malaysian political landscape.
"Sabah and Sarawak deserve it. A DPM from the Borneo states is long overdue," he said on Tuesday (Jan 4) amid speculation of a Cabinet reshuffle and appointment of a deputy prime minister.
According to Bagang, the candidate from either Sarawak or Sabah must have a good track record.
He said it would be a milestone under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 to recognise the position of the Borneo states in the context of the Malaysian federation.
"It also will reflect the spirit of Keluarga Malaysia introduced by the Prime Minister," he added.
Bagang also said that a deputy prime minister from the Borneo states would know the needs of the two states and prioritise any development that is needed.
"At the same time, it would be (expected) of a deputy PM from here to bring tremendous changes to both states," he added.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob later said Tuesday that any talk of a Cabinet reshuffle is mere speculation, adding that his main focus is to solve flood woes and curb the spread of Covid-19.
