KUALA LUMPUR: A group of good Samaritans raised over RM20,000 in aid for an Orang Asli village which was hit by the floods at Pulau Indah.
People's Volunteer Corps (Rela) honorary Commissioner Datuk Seri Michael Chong said the group included the founder of Lala Chong Kayu Ara Seafood Restaurant Yim Sie Chong and organising chairman Ken Hng.
They went to help at Kampung Orang Asli Pulau Indah on Sunday (Jan 2), he said.
"The donations came from friends and associates as well as tips from customers of the restaurant.
"On my end we also raised RM5,000 for flood relief there.
"We bought personal protective equipment, bedding, bedsheets, towels, food and daily necessities for the villagers," he said when met at the MCA Public Services and Complaints Department on Tuesday (Jan 4).
He said a total of 400 people from 91 families at the village were affected by the floods.
"We chose to help these people as they were overlooked during previous relief efforts.
"The floodwaters rose above knee level and damaged their beds and appliances," he said.
Chong also urged others to come forward and offer a helping hand, especially to those who were overlooked.
Yim said he sympathised with the victims who were affected by the floods.
"I hope we can help them get through this period," he said.
