A Fairfax County police officer shot an armed man in Chantilly Tuesday afternoon while attempting to serve an emergency custody order on him for mental health issues, a spokesman for the police department said.

The shooting occurred at a residential home in the 4500 block of Briarton Drive around 1 p.m., the spokesman said. The spokesman could not immediately say what type of weapon the man was armed with or how many shots the officer fired at him.
The man was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis is headed to the scene and is expected to give an update on the shooting later.
