TOKYO -- The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a heavy snowfall warning for the capital's 23 wards on Jan. 6, as a low-pressure system brought snow over a wide area of the Kanto region including Tokyo.
The agency said 6 centimeters of snow had accumulated in central Tokyo as of 4 p.m. on Jan. 6, while the city of Tsukuba in Ibaraki Prefecture northeast of the capital recorded 5 cm. In other prefectures neighboring the capital, Yokohama's Naka Ward and Chiba's Chuo Ward saw 3 cm of snow accumulate, the agency said.
The JMA predicted that the snow was expected to continue falling in the Kanto region until late at night on Jan. 6.
The agency warned of possible disruptions to traffic and icy roads due to heavy snowfall, and called for people to be vigilant of snow settling on electrical cables and trees.
