'Not an iota of difference!' Heartbroken couple slam Warm Home Discount amid energy crisis

Husband and wife Gary and Natasha Waterhouse said they were anxious and found it "stressful" at the prospect of energy bills soaring by 60-percent come the spring as they said the Government's £140 Warm Home discount will not cover their needs in the slightest.

Ms Waterhouse told Sky News that she needs the warmth for her legs to tackle a debilitating condition which she likened to “serious arthritis”.

She noted how her legs “lock up” when cold as she shared her fears of facing the coming months with soaring energy bills.

Ms Waterhouse said: “I need the heat, again it is very tricky to decide to between heat or food!”

The couple were then asked whether the Warm Home allowance of £140 per-year helps them keep warm, and if a possible £10 uplift will make a difference.

Mr Waterhouse, who cares for his wife, replied: “None whatsoever.”

He slammed the payout as “totally insignificant unfortunately” as he tore into the Government initiative.

He acknowledged that “while every bit helps”, the payment, which in practice acts as a discount on energy bills “is not going to make any difference to us”.

The frustrated homeowner went as far as to say the help would make “not one iota” of difference.

The Warm Home discount is a one-off £140 payment to your energy supplier for a discount on your electricity or gas bill between October 2021 and March 2022.

While Winter Fuel Payments are paid to Brits born on or before September 26, 1955, to help them pay for heating bills, those eligible can receive between £100 and £300 to help keep them warm.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has also pledged a £500 million contribution through local government which he said will help those bracing the cold this winter. At a press conference on Tuesday, he said he “appreciated the difficulties” people are facing in light of soaring gas and energy prices.

Millions of Britons are bracing for massive energy price increases, compounded by the pandemic, Brexit and supply chain issues. It comes as the cost of gas has spiralled across Europe and the rest of the world as demand has soared following the re-emergence of countries out of the pandemic.
