JOHOR BARU: Umno should play a more proactive role in helping Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob manage the turmoil in the country, says party vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

       The former Johor mentri besar said Umno should not leave Ismail unaided as he represents the party in the current government.

       “His failure would also be our failure. The last thing we want is for the people’s anger towards Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional to also lead to the failure of the ‘Malaysian Family’ government,” he said in a statement here on Saturday (Jan 8).

       Mohamed Khaled said that Umno was currently doing its best to find the best strategy to help the government to deal with the turmoil.

       Mohamed Khaled added that Ismail Sabri knew that the people’s confidence in the government had gone down.

       “I sympathise with him, especially when there is pressure on him to reshuffle the Cabinet.

       Mohamed Khaled claimed that Ismail Sabri had inherited a ‘weak’ Cabinet.

       “Who should be replaced depends entirely on the support of every party. One wrong move and the current government falls,” he said, adding that Umno is in a position that it has never been in before.

       “The Prime Minister is from Umno, but Umno is not in control of the government,” he said.
