KOTA TINGGI: Police have seized contraband cigarettes worth RM80,000 and arrested two men in a raid on a house at Kampung Baru Bayu Damai, Pengerang here.

       Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Hussin Zamora said the raid was conducted at about 3.30pm on Saturday (Jan 8).

       “We managed to arrest two local men, aged 35 and 37, for their involvement in smuggling activities in Pengerang," he said

       “Inspection of the house found 807 cartons of cigarettes hidden in the garage,” added Supt Hussin in a statement on Sunday (Jan 9).

       He added that the confiscated items were worth RM80,000 and the case was being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 for possession or sale of smuggled cigarettes.

       The offence carries a fine of not less than 10 times the value of the goods or RM100,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction.

       He added that the suspects are currently remanded for 14 days from Sunday.
