JOHOR BARU: Five people have been detained in two separate cases by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) here.

In the first case, a company managing director and an engineer were arrested for allegedly making false claims for RM250,000 for the construction of a temporary bridge in Segamat.

According to a source from the MACC, the two suspects, aged 52 and 41, were arrested at about 7pm on Sunday at the MACC office here.

The source said that between 2016 and 2020, both of them had allegedly conspired to make false claims for the construction of a temporary building worth RM4mil in Segamat.

In fact, no actual work was carried out.

State MACC director Datuk Azmi Alias confirmed the arrest.

He added that the suspects were remanded for five days from yesterday.

In the second case, a retired government-linked company (GLC) director was arrested for the second time this month for alleged abuse of power by handing over projects worth more than RM50,000 to his sons.

The 61-year-old suspect was supposed to be released yesterday after his remand period for a separate corruption case ended.

He was rearrested at the MACC office here along with his sons, who are 28 and 34 years old, at about 4pm yesterday.

According to MACC sources, the director, who used to be the manager of a GLC in Segamat, was alleged to have given several projects to his two sons, who ran their own companies.

The case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009.

The three suspects are expected to be brought to the Johor magistrate’s court today for a remand order.

Last Wednesday, the retiree and another manager from a different company were arrested for investigation into a corruption case involving RM500,000.
